Call for Applications: Mandela Day Service Grants 2023

The United States Department of State and IREX are pleased to announce that applications for the Mandela Day Service Grant, a one-of-a-kind partnership opportunity for Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders alumni, are now open.

Officially, Mandela International Day of Service is on July 18; nevertheless, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the custodian of his legacy, has called for “Making Every Day a Mandela Day” to encourage year-round service. The new Mandela Day Service Grant will reward Fellowship Alumni for short-term service projects that the Fellowship considers will contribute to long-term community development. Through the grant, up to six Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni (or Alumni teams) will receive up to $1,000 each to implement a short-term community service or volunteer project in honor of Mandela Day.

The Mandela Day Service Grant, funded by the United States Department of State, will enable Fellowship Alumni to create, implement, and actively participate in short-term volunteer-driven community campaigns that contribute to longer-term projects aimed at improving livelihoods. Up to six Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni or Alumni teams will receive up to $1,000 each through the grant to carry out a short-term community service or volunteer initiative in commemoration of Mandela Day.
