BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION

WFP Security identifies, assesses, and manages all security risks that affect personnel, assets or programme delivery. As a key actor in the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS), we leverage partnerships, digital innovation, and local resources within a clear framework of accountability.

The Security Division is looking for an Intern for the Security Operations Unit. The internship program at the Security Division aims to develop and prepare young talent by offering opportunity for candidates to obtain workplace experience, expand knowledge, refine career goals, and build professional networks, including mentors and useful contacts. Interns will learn about security risk management, operational planning, crisis management, context and conflict analysis, humanitarian access and hostage negotiation and management, and incident negotiation and management. In addition to learning and getting job experience, interns will be expected to contribute to the Security Division’s work.

GENERAL INFORMATION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Security Division invites qualified candidates to apply for the internship programme. Opportunities are available in the Division’s Security Operations Team/Operations Unit.

The Security Operations Intern will perform the following duties:

  1. Assist the security operations officers in providing technical advice, guidance and operational support upon request in line with the WFP Security Management Policy and Framework of Accountability;
  2. Monitor security field operations, attend and provide inputs to the fortnightly operational briefings on latest security developments in the different regions and further proposed actions;
  3. Participate in cross-functional Weekly Analytical and Coordination (WAC) meetings on all regions, provide briefing notes on the impact on WFP operations and keep the tracking of requests for operational support emerging from field offices;
  4. Support the development of internal guidance materials relative to WFP security risk management (security guides, smartcard pocketbook, standard operation procedures, etc.);
  5. Based on field requests, coordinate with the WFP Aviation Unit to facilitate their security assessment of commercial airlines based on the WFP Guidelines on Commercial Air Travel Safety;
  6. Support the cross-functional cooperation in order to ensure the corporate alignment within the Sec Division and with other divisional structures at HQ level;
  7. Assist in organizing the operations unit database using the dedicated corporate tools;
  8. Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

To qualify for an internship with the World Food Programme (WFP), the applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme (for example, Bachelor’s degree) from a recognised university and have completed at least two years of the programme. Candidates should have attended classes in the past 12 months; OR
  2. Be currently enrolled in a graduate programme (for example, Master degree) from a recognised university and have attended classes in the past 12 months; ORBe computer literate in standard software applications;
  3. Excellent command of English; Working knowledge of French/Arabic language would be an asset.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  1. Understand WFP and the contribution we make to saving lives and changing lives.
  2. Understand the contribution of Security Division to achieving that mandate through its different functions of operations, policy and enabling and the front office.
  3. Demonstrate experience working in teams, drafting, and reviewing communication documents.
  4. Learnt and been immersed in the work environment and demonstrated ability to collaborate with others.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
