Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative Program

Become one of the 50 empowered students who apply for the CYFI Program. With the help of this program, young people in Nigeria will be given the tools they need to advance entrepreneurship, good governance, public health, and civil freedoms. The U.S. Consulate General, Lagos, introduced the dynamic youth-based Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative (CYFI) in 2011. Nigerian youth with remarkable vision, talent, and experience are brought together by CYFI to create and carry out projects that will benefit Nigerian society. Walter Carrington, a former ambassador to Nigeria who served as the organization’s inspiration, was a supporter of democracy, civil liberties, and improved ties between the United States and Nigeria. The CYFI fellows are dedicated to putting Walter Carrington’s principles into action.

Our Why

Youth unemployment is a significant challenge in Nigeria, as young people between the ages of 15 and 35 constitute over 60% of the country’s population and make up a significant portion of the unemployed population. The majority of this population consists of university students, who bring their unique perspectives to drive innovation and address business issues but are limited by funding, expertise, and an enabling environment.

Equipping aspiring and emerging student entrepreneurs in tertiary institutions with the skills, knowledge, and network to adapt to the changing business environment, innovate, and scale their businesses towards promoting youth employment and economic growth.

Goal

This program will equip 50 aspiring and emerging student entrepreneurs in tertiary institutions across Lagos State with the skills, knowledge, and network to adapt to the changing business environment, innovate, and scale their businesses towards promoting youth employment and economic growth in Lagos State.
